Mid-way through

Mid-term week is approaching! I'd usually be freaking out, worried about how well I will do. But this semester I feel more than prepared for my tests. All my professors have been very thorough in the information they present. This semester has been so much easier. I'm not sure if it's because I've fully adjusted to NCCU or because my work load is so much lighter. I'm taking 17 credits again but my professors don't give nearly as much homework. It's been such a relief. I can't believe that my freshman year of college is approaching its end. It's gone by so fast but I have so many memories. It still seems as if just a few weeks ago I was sitting at home trying to decide which school I wanted to attend. And now in a few months I'll be a NCCU sophomore! I'm heavily considering taking summer school just so I can stay here for the summer. While I will always love Maryland, because it's my home town, North Carolina just seems like the place for me. Besides I'm still hoping to play basketball next season so being here for the summer will allow me to work out with the team. Also, I'll be ahead of the game with classes. First semester of next year I'll have to apply to get into the athletic training program and I'm hoping being ahead will appeal to the person evaluating me. Now, enough of school stuff, this weekend is CIAA weekend!!! I had never heard of it until my suitemate told me about it. She told me it's a huge event that takes place in Charlotte, North Carolin every year. I've heard there are basketball games, step shows, parties, etc. I'm so excited to be going home with my suitemate, Tinogia, to experience the festivities. Then right around the corner from this weekend is spring break! That'll be a relief, I need a break from class. Tinogia and I are considering spending spring break at Virginia Beach. Hopefully, everything will go as planned. But back to campus activities. The men's basketball team just recently had their last home game. Unfortunately they lost after putting up a great fight. Everyone was shocked and dissapointed because they have many wins at home. The half time show was entertaining. Mr. Brian, who started this blogging idea participated. He made it to the final round of musical chairs, which had all the spectators laughing. The women's team has been doing well also, and they won their last home game. Their final home game is this Saturday! Time to hit the gym for an intense work out!

Second Semester!

Blogging nation!

I survived first semester! With being sick and then partying and all the extra things that come with being in college, I was a little worried about my grades. My grade point average was the worst it's ever been but that's okay. I made it through first semester and got out all my "messing up". While on winter break I took a lot of time to think about what I would do differently. I couldn't possibly end this semester with a 2.6, like the first. No way I would get accepted into the athletic training program next year with grades like that. I took some time to prioritize and I believe I have things in order now. I'm back to working out daily, which I had gotten away from and yes I still party a little bit. NCCU parties are too great to just give up on. I told myself I would only party on weekends and I wouldn't go out on Friday nights until my homework for the weekend was at least half done. Sundays are still reserved for cleaning and homework but I am also searching for a nearby church to attend. Well today at NCCU we had premium dinner night!!! I walk into the caf and smell seafood. Once in line, I discover that crab legs, fried scallops, steamed shrimp, mashed potatoes, and broccoli was being served. Oh how I love North Carolina Central University. I have friends at surrounding schools and they have yet to have dinner choices we have. The food was delicious, tasted like they had my grandmother and mother in the back seasoning and cooking the food. Speaking of mother and grandmother, I got a new tattoo. It's a rocky looking heart with angel wings and "Mommy" underneath. It hurt just as much as my first one that says "Grannie" but was well worth it. I now have six tattoos total. I guess you could say I'm addicted... I have ideas for more but I agreed not to get any more tattoos until I'm 20. That's almost TWO years away, oh man not sure I can wait that long. Check out the pictures of my tattoos. Well, that's all for now, it's time to start preparing for tomorrow...FOUR classes!

What's new?

Blog world! How are you all doing?! I apologize that my entries have become so few and far in between. I've been battling the flu and thanks to the nurses in the health center, I feel much better. So much has happened since my last blog so where to start... Well events on campus are getting better and better! Football has been winning and basketball season has started. I have been to both home basketball games this season, and I love them! The games are also intense, and never have a dull moment. The spectators are always loud and cheery, I just wish I was one of the players they were cheering for. Hopefully next year I will be. After coming down with the flu, I missed an entire week of classes! Can you imagine how behind I was, and still am? With the help of my awesome professors I'm almost up to speed. They were all happy to meet with me to explain what I missed and all gave me adequate time to get my missed work turned in. All I have left is math, the tough stuff. I have to complete eight assignments on mathxl by Sunday night, and I am not looking forward to them at all. Well Thanksgiving is coming and I haven't been home since Labor Day, and I can't wait. While I'll miss NCCU, I'm excited to go home and see my family. Going home is going to be fun, one of my suitemates is coming with me. I hope my family doesn't embarrass me too bad in front of her, because they tend to do that like most families. I have a small fear of going home and seeing my mother's reaction to my three new tattoos I've acquired since being here. It shouldn't be such a big deal considering I left home with two that she knows about, right? Being home in my own room will be like a vacation much needed, because sharing a room is very difficult at times especially when you don't get along with your roommate. Luckily there's a lot to do on campus so we aren't often in our room at the same time. Anyways, Pre-Dawn is tomorrow!!!! They are also the best parties on campus, as well as the most tiring. If you aren't tired from partying until 5am, you will surely be tired from sweating in the blazing heat. When I return from Thanksgiving break, it'll be that time of the year again! My birthdayyyyy!!! I will finally be 18, and couldn't be more excited. I will no longer be made fun of for being the "underaged baby." Well it's about that time to prepare myself for math class...no way I can miss this class anymore than I already have!

Back at it!

I'm back! NCCU has me so busy I haven't even had time to sit back, unwind, and blog. Even now my free time is still tight. This is nothing like high school, professors give you a LOT of work...much more than highschool! It's all good, I'll make it. So...what's new? How are you all? Let's see...our football team has still failed to win a game, but I have faith. I haven't been to a volleyball game yet, and basketball...long story! Basketball didn't exactly work out the way I had planned it to work. Before tryouts began I was already getting behind in my classes but I thought I could manage. Boy was I wrong! Basketball work outs were twice a day, the first being at 6am. The work outs were KILLERS, every morning I had trouble just walking back to my door and even more trouble getting myself to go to class exhausted. Unfortunately that routine didn't last long for me, with practices twice a day I began getting further behind in more than 1 class. I was stuck with a decision to make... I've always been taught academics come first, and paying this tuition bill I don't have time to play around. Well, I decided to hang it up for this year until I get everything straight. It was a lot for a freshman from out of state to handle, especially with the rigorous schedule I have. But all hope isn't lost yet, I love basketball too much to let my career end with me quitting. Next season, I'll be prepared for the all the responsibilities. Besides that, all is well. I still don't miss home but home misses me. And for some reason all of my roommates can never get along at one time. This week, this one isn't talking to that one and vice versa. Luckily I've become pretty tight with one of my roommates and we have fun inviting people over and playing them on the Nintendo Wii, and making inside jokes only we understand. So during my time away from blogging I was pretty down about basketball and overwhelmed with school work but things are starting to pick up! I can't wait until Centennial Homecoming so I can see the step show and my favorite comedian, Kevin Hart. Oh yeah...Pretty Ricky is currently on our campus. I have no idea why, but they're in our caf AND it's chicken wednesday...I dare not go to lunch today...lines are long!!

messing up

Sooo, i thought i had a grip on everything until this past week. I've been depriving myself of sleep and missing classes here and there. The nights seem to sprint bringing the day too early. Every class is a struggle to wake up for now, but once I'm up all is well. Friday morning I was sooo happy when I woke up, checked my email and discovered my english class was cancelled. I went back to sleep and ended up missing my 9am spanish class. Luckily my professor allowed me to make-up the quiz I missed, and I'm back on track! This week I have promised myself I will not miss any classes. It is now tuesday, and I haven't broken my promise. I've actually been getting a lot more done. Changing up my schedule and the way I do things has been the really helpful. I am now going to sleep at a decent hour and eating breakfast in the morning to help get me going. Napping after i am done with classes and sleeping in on the weekends is a definite must. I mean I have transformed these stiff beds into a plush get away. My bed holds six pillows, two comforters, and a fleece throw blanket making it my get away. Recently my suite has been furnished with tables, chairs, and couches and my suite mates and I couldn't be more pleased. We have turned this "dorm" into a "home." We hung curtains, layed down rugs, hung mirrors, added a tv, and put together accent peieces for our tables. People are shocked when they walk into our living room, and try to stay for longer than they are welcome. Well, thanks to some of the wild people on campus our visitation has been revoked. My suite mates and I are currently the only ones able to enjoy our home. Well, time to go study!

Getting in rhythm!

Now that the third week of classes has started, I have seemed to catch a rhythm. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I have 8am classes! They aren't so bad anymore now that I've gotten used to them. I still wake up every morning and check my email hoping there's an announcement saying class has been cancelled; I haven't been that lucky yet. Tuesdays and Thursdays my first class isn't until 1 o'clock, and my latest at 2:25. I have grown to love my schedule, unlike my roommate who has a class at 9am and then a second at 6pm. Ever since I missed my first homework assignment for health, I stay ahead on all homework assignments. Once a month, Friday afternoons are used for washing clothes and every Saturday morning I do all my weekend homework. Sunday is supposed to be the day of rest, but on this day all my roommates and I get our suite cleaned and do some heavy studying.

As I spend more time around this campus I find more and more perks! Over the weekend I found out the library is open super late and that we have a "to go" caf. I love the fact that students here get discounts and various surrounding fast food places. I'm quick to whip out my NCCU ID at Burger king to get that discount! Unfortunately the drastic changes in environment have gotten me sick! :( But all is well! I went home for the weekend and was ecstatic when I returned here. I missed being on campus, while being at home. Now that I'm back, I'm busier than ever! There are so many groups and organizations on campus I want to join and get involved in. I've been scrambling around to make sure I get my community service hours completed. 15 hours every semester isn't so bad after all, it keeps me active and involved on campus. I think I LOVE it here!

Transition to a Soaring Eagle

Wassup NCCU!!! I'm Rachel, a freshman at NCCU, majoring in athletic training. I'm originally from Columbia, MD so moving here was a BIG change. None of my friends from home came with me so I was thrown into an unknown pool of fish. I had heard of southern hospitality but didn't know much about it. As it turns out it's no joke! People up north are nowhere as kind as people here. I quickly made friends and adjusted great! Move in day was nerve-wracking knowing I would have FOUR other roommates, but thankfully we all get along just fine. Thank God I wasn't one of those freshmen walking around lost on the first day of classes; I was lucky enough to be given a tour of the campus by a friend. Don't get it twisted, this campus might not be huge but all the hills and steps are a good enough work out! Walking up those "Jesus steps" at 7:30 in the morning could be a workout used to counteract "freshman 15!" Once you factor in the heat, I honestly believe I have lost weight since I have been on campus. I'm not used to this heat, not one bit. But everything here is just great, all my professors are cool, except the fact they don't allow cell-phones in class! And of course NCCU parties are on point!!! They get hot, literally, but it's not hard to get used to and soaked up into the atmosphere! College life is great! I'm so glad I chose NCCU!
